Synopsis

For 7 years, Chinese American filmmaker Nanfu Wang followed activist Rosa María Payá in her fight against the Cuban communist regime, which Rosa built on the work of her father Oswaldo Payá, an opposition democrat and five-times Nobel Peace Prize nominee. While Nanfu sees a parallel to Chinese communism in American capitalism, Rosa supports the Republican effort to eradicate the left and sees hope for her country in the election of Donald Trump. The documentary illustrates the universality and duality of “democracy”.
