Synopsis

The director’s father, once a celebrated (post-)Soviet figure skater, travelled the imaginary West during his tours and filmed his life through the transitional years of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Revisiting his amateur VHS archive, Maria Stoianova explores his personal paradise set against a shifting political landscape. Fifteen tapes, 1986 to 1994. The dream of the West. The birth of a daughter. The fall of the USSR. The end of a career. The camera stops. Disillusionment sets in. Fragments of Ice is not just a coming-of-age story — it’s a chronicle of change: for a man, a daughter, and a society still in transition.
