Synopsis

In late 2011, a rash of tuba thefts began from high schools across Southern California. Alison O’Daniel was curious about the tuba players, imagining them in class, empty-handed, bored, listening and wondered how the band sounded without its lowest sounding instrument. Before the thefts were even finished, she decided to make a film called The Tuba Thieves. Instead of focusing on the thieves, she used the act of listening as a storyline. The Tuba Thieves radically shifts the use of subtitles and captions by considering them as a third narrative space equal to visuals and sound. O’Daniel won the Best Feature Sound Design Award during the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
