Synopsis

In the 19th century, Countess Claire Ledoux (Marlene Dietrich), a penniless French adventuress, arrives in New Orleans with the intention of marrying a wealthy man. She sets her sights on Charles Giraud (Roland Young), a wealthy banker. However, her meeting with Captain Robert Latour (Bruce Cabot) complicates her plans. When her past is threatened with exposure by a former suitor, Zolotov (Mischa Auer), Claire invents a fictitious cousin, “Lili”, to deflect suspicion. She disguises herself as Lili, leading a double life that leads her to choose between financial security and true love.
