Introducing

A true weaving of present-day images and family and historical archives, Bye Bye Tiberias is a journey through four generations of bold Palestinian women who preserve their intimate and collective memory through the strength of their bonds, despite exile, dispossession, and upheavals.

Synopsis

Hiam Abbass left her Palestinian hometown in her early twenties to pursue her dream of becoming an actress in Europe, leaving behind her mother, grandmother, and seven sisters. Thirty years later, her daughter Lina, a filmmaker, returns with her to the village and, for the first time, questions her mother's bold choices, her chosen exile, and how the women in their family have impacted their lives.

This deeply moving journey, with its wealth of personal photos and videos from the period, enables us to understand the consequences of the Nakba at the level of one family.
France Info Culture
Following the tenuous and sensitive thread of memory, Lina Soualem places her mother’s story and her own within that of a line of Palestinian women.
L’Humanité
The lull and beauty of the film obviously do not hide its urgency, given that its location, Palestine, is more threatened than ever. This imminent fear of loss permeates every shot of the film, making Lina Soualem’s images a precious legacy of living memory.
