The story of this initiation tale takes place in Ireland in the 9th century, against a background of historical facts. Kells Abbey, where the story is set, is itself located in Kells, County Meath, Ireland, and was founded in the early 6th century. The abbey has long been home to a famous manuscript, renowned for its Celtic illuminations, produced around 800 AD, known as the 'Book of Kells' or the 'Great Gospel of St Columba'.
