Synopsis
In 2014, Beijing decided that candidates for the Hong Kong administrative region would be nominated by a committee of 1,200 people and only these candidates would have the right to participate in the elections. Protests broke out and large demonstrations took place. The movement soon made global headlines as the ‘umbrella revolution’ because when the police tried to evacuate the protesters, they used their umbrellas to protect themselves from tear gas and other coercive devices.
