Introducing
In the presence of the Greek Ambassador in Brussels
The Ogre of Athens, one of the key films of the 1950s, tells the story of an insignificant official who pretends to be a wanted criminal of whom he is a lookalike. By blending the expressionism typical of film noir, comic neo-realism and poetic realism, Níkos Koúndouros revolutionised the representation of the working classes and the excluded in Greek auteur cinema.
Synopsis
Thomas, a small, insignificant bank clerk, spends Christmas alone. He is the double of a hardened criminal, the "Ogre of Athens". Chased by the police, he takes refuge in a "tekkés" (shady bar) in Piraeus. There, the gangsters take him for one of their own.
