Synopsis
While experiencing her first period at school, June, a twelve-year-old Kenyan girl, is confronted with the harsh reality of ignorance, exclusion, and shame. As no one had informed her about this natural process, she is mocked by her classmates, mistreated by her teacher, and left with unanswered questions. What is happening to her body? Is she sick? Could she even infect her pregnant mother? And above all, will she ever be able to return to school without shame? In her despair, she runs away from home. Impure is a striking and thoughtful coming-of-age story that addresses the issue of “period shame,” inspired by real and tragic events.

The screening will be preceded by a welcome drink and followed by a panel discussion and Q&A, aiming to break the silence around menstrual stigma and menstrual poverty. Menstrual poverty is not only a financial issue but also an educational one, affecting girls’ ability to participate fully in school and society. Menstrual health is universal and intersectional, including the ways in which culture, systemic inequality, and social norms shape experiences.
