Synopsis

The story takes place in New Orleans in 1937. Catherine Holly (Elizabeth Taylor) is committed to a psychiatric hospital after witnessing the violent death of her cousin, Sebastian Venable, during a trip to Spain. Her aunt, Violet Venable (Katharine Hepburn), a wealthy widow, wishes to have a lobotomy performed on Catherine to suppress her traumatic memories and preserve her son's reputation. She offers a substantial donation to the hospital for neurosurgeon Dr. John Cukrowicz (Montgomery Clift) to perform the operation. However, Dr. Cukrowicz decides to investigate the actual events before proceeding with such an operation.
