Synopsis
Landscapes, fleeting conversations, chance encounters and ambient sounds move in and out of frame, forming a slow elegy to a scorched earth. Shot at various distances from the front line over a two-year period, this audiovisual diary traces Ukraine's descent into the abyss of total war, and captures the subtle changes within its society. The jagged notes of panic and terror that marked the first weeks of the Russian invasion gradually give way to a callous acceptance of loss and devastation. What becomes a grim new normal for Ukrainians becomes a fading memory for much of the outside world. In this (meta)physical context of collective catastrophe, a new generation dares to imagine a future. This film is part of the documentary collection Generation Ukraine, launched by ARTE in collaboration with European partners. The collection features 12 films made in Ukraine that explore the long-term impacts of the conflict. The screening is presented within the framework of the ‘European Dialogue’ in Brussels, an event that brings together young Europeans to reflect on the future of the continent in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the EU’s enlargement perspectives.
