Wong Kar-wai revolutionized Hong Kong cinema by adopting a bold and innovative approach to narrative structure, characterized by a decidedly exceptional style, developed in collaboration with cinematographer Chris Doyle and editor and production designer William Chang. His cinematic aesthetic stands out for rejecting Western stereotypes about the East and avoiding any ostentatious representation of national culture. Instead, he wraps Chinese sensibilities in a subtle interplay of shadow and light, giving his films a unique depth.
The installation offers a detailed exploration of Wong Kar-wai’s work, immersing visitors in the cultural and political contexts that shaped it. It will be organized around three distinct dimensions: the 1960s, the 1990s, and finally the universe of Kung-fu, thus providing a new perspective on his cinematic evolution.
