Synopsis
July 1988. The use of a new weapon of mass destruction in Japan’s Kantō region triggers World War III. 2019, thirty-one years later. As preparations for the following year’s Olympic Games rekindle memories of the past glory of Neo-Tokyo—a megacity built on Tokyo Bay—Kaneda, leader of a gang of vigilante bōsōzoku, roams the city’s devastated streets on his motorcycle, wreaking havoc. One night, Tetsuo, a member of the gang, crosses paths with a strange boy linked to an experimental government program. Under the stunned gaze of Kaneda and his crew, Tetsuo and the mysterious boy are taken to a military laboratory. Determined to save his friend, Kaneda infiltrates the facility, where he discovers that Tetsuo has developed supernatural powers. Meanwhile, one of the children at the lab predicts the awakening of AKIRA, the government’s best-kept secret. Seeking answers about his new powers, Tetsuo descends into the depths of Neo-Tokyo, where AKIRA has lain dormant for years.
