“I’d left home in the summer; by the time Bertrand died, it was fall. The first thing I wanted to do after spending more than a month in Corsica under the yellow neon lights of Room 6, wandering the hallways, gasping for air in the intensive care unit waiting room, which was brimming with terror; the first thing I wanted to do was return to our home. The home as a magical fortress, as a place of refuge, where one counts one’s treasures, one’s spoils, what was lost in battle. The shelter where one tends to one’s wounds, where one devises strategies for what lies ahead.”
