Synopsis
The Rift Between Us is a talking heads documentary that explores the impact of misogynoir on romantic relationships between Black women and Black men in Belgium. At the intersection of sexism and anti-Black racism, the film asks how colonial legacies continue to shape the ways we see ourselves, each other, and the relationships we build. Through honest and intimate conversations, the documentary examines how colorism, texturism, stereotypes, sexism, and (internalized) racism influence women's self-image, emotional well-being, and experiences of love and intimacy. Rather than reducing these tensions to individual conflicts, The Rift Between Us uncovers the historical and social structures that continue to shape them. At the heart of the film are three scholars: Nozizwe Dube, Marie-Fidèle Dusingize, and Betel Mabille. Drawing from both lived experience and academic expertise, they offer three distinct perspectives on the emotional and structural dimensions of misogynoir. Together, they reveal how history, identity, power, and perception continue to influence the relationships between Black women and Black men today. Honest, vulnerable, and thought-provoking, The Rift Between Us creates space for dialogue, reflection, and a deeper understanding of experiences that too often remain unseen and unspoken.
