Introducing

“Without it being the center of the story, [there is] this idea that once something is “on” it has a kind of consciousness, regardless of whether we define them as human—as if that’s the only way in which there is merit. Once you’re on, whether you’re a human or a clone or an AI or an animal or a tree, there is some significance to being off. That is in the background of the film.” Kogonada for Sloan Science and Film

Synopsis

When his young daughter's beloved companion — an android named Yang — malfunctions, Jake (Colin Farrell) searches for a way to repair him. In the process, Jake discovers the life that has been passing in front of him, reconnecting with his wife (Jodie Turner-Smith) and daughter across a distance he didn't know was there.

This is intimate, wistful science fiction that is most concerned with the personal, even the sentimental, down to the plaintive piano strains of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s main musical theme. In After Yang, the future is strange, but not to be feared.
Film of the week
This is a film of transporting grace and compassion, cerebral but never cold. It’s no small compliment to say that After Yang seems almost like an American sci-fi movie that Ozu or Kore-eda might have made.
The Hollywood Reporter
On the surface, Kogonada has made a movie about what our futures may look like, but through a lens of positive possibilities rather than morbid fate.
