Synopsis

When the communist government raises food prices in 1962, the rebellious workers from the small industrial town of Novocherkassk go on strike. The massacre which then ensues is seen through the eyes of a devout party activist.

Konchalovsky aborde ce passage de l’histoire soviétique avec tout le brio de sa mise en scène précise et anxiogène, dans un noir et blanc magnifique.

Kontchalovski filme cette déroute (…) grâce à un magnifique travail, d’abord du noir et blanc, mais surtout du plan fixe, saisissant la situation comme une mosaïque de déréglements qui conduisent petit à petit au pire.
