Info
2023 marks the twentieth anniversary of Oldboy (2003) by Park Chan-wook. A prominent South Korean modern classic, diverting from the domestic allegorical cinema of the past and entering a new arena that let go of the national and embraced the global. It went on to become the first from this nation to win the Cannes Grand Prix award in 2004. Cinema Galeries commemorates Oldboy’s vigentennial with the question: why does this film have importance within the metamorphosis of South Korean cinematic history? Topics include its divergence from Korean New Wave cinema, how in the early 2000s the birth of the internet, the first smartphone, and corresponding video game technologies influenced the film, as well as the recurring theme of emasculation in its predecessors embodied within Oldboy.
