Basir Mahmood “I watch you do”

Exhibition 10.05 > 02.06 / Lecture 14.05

The exhibition I watch you do brings together works from across Basir Mahmood’s practice, focusing on themes from the world of film, work and performance through his reflections on the social, political and aesthetic structures of everyday life.

Fascinated by the socio-political and aesthetic structures of everyday life, Mahmood began working in sculpture before turning to video, where he uses cinematic processes to investigate the interplay between work, identity and performativity. The first people involved were workers whom he compensated with their usual salary. He worked with baggage handlers, fishermen, actors, filmmakers and others in their professional lives as well as in their private lives. The bodies, behaviours and narratives of the participants form Mahmood’s work as they respond to and enrich his demands, both by seeking to extract truth from a context and by deliberately making it more complex.

In addition to the exhibition, Mahmood presents the performance-reading Moon-sighting, in which anecdotes about the creation of works in Lollywood and projections of extracts from the artist’s works and films from the history of Pakistani cinema are combined.
