Driven by the desire to open up genres and to offer a quality selection to a wide audience in an exceptional setting, CINÉMA GALERIES organizes for the seventh edition its festival L’heure d’été. In 2018, the city of Rio de Janeiro and Brazilian cinema will be honored.
Driven by the desire to open up genres and to offer a quality selection to a wide audience in an exceptional setting, CINÉMA GALERIES organizes for the seventh edition its festival L’heure d’été. Each year, in partnership with the Echevinat de la Culture of the City of Brussels and the Brussels-Capital Region, a selection of movies will be programmed to discover the unique atmosphere of an international city.
In 2018, the city of Rio de Janeiro and Brazilian cinema will be honored. Foot, samba, carnival. Yes, these are the clichés that most often come up to define Rio. But when we decide to make them live together, we enter a dance where the dribble rubs the parades of runway queens and the booty-shaking of transvestites. The programme will bring to the screen the charm of a city where the exuberance of nature pulsates and whose postcard landscapes do not hide the violent contrasts between wealth and poverty.
In parallel with the Carioca cinema classics, a photographic exhibition shows the struggle of the minorities for a greater democracy. Several documentaries will show the country’s most recent situation and its political change. Among them, O Processo (Best Feature: Visions Du Réel 2018, Berlinale 2018) portrays the trial of Dilma Rousseff and her defense struggling to prove her innocence in the face of a corrupt system. Obscuro Barroco (Special Mention Teddy Bear Berlinale 2018) explores the different quests of self, through disguise, carnival and political struggle. The festival aims to take viewers to discover the city through a selection of films that have been shot or are directly related to the culture of the country. Seventeen exceptional sessions will take place outdoors. A giant screen of 8m x 15m will be installed at the sports area on the Left Bank of Brussels les Bains. The other sessions will be screened in the CINÉMA GALERIES rooms.
